I know that every year it's hard to believe your children are another year older, but 6 is different.  I don't really know why.  Six is like the beginning of the new year, when you keep writing the old year on accident.  I keep catching myself saying Rowan is 5 years old.

For the past two years, I've been trying to convince either of the boys to have a space themed birthday party.  I've collected stickers and favors and decorations to go along with the space theme over that span of time, because, well, I like space.

I finally got Rowan on board this year, begrudgingly.  It's not that he doesn't like space.  He loves space.  But I think they like the flashiness of a birthday party theme based on the latest popular cartoon/movie/game.  Party stores know this....obviously.

As the party day approached, I surprisingly felt uninspired by my space themed party collection.  Weird.  And since Rowan had an overall pretty shitty year of being 5, I decided I was going to surprise him with a Slugterra themed party!

What's Slugterra, you say?  Oh, just a very serious animated series about a world beneath ours where people (and other beings) practice "Slug Fu", a sort of shooting slugs (the slimy kind) in a such a way that they transform and wound your opponent.

It's strange.  And kind of obscure, really. Not too many kids seem to watch it.  But Rowan does.  He LOVES it.

Oddly, I was more inspired by this theme, which has absolutely no ready-made decorations, favors, or games available for purchase so we had to get creative.   Maybe that's what drew me to it.

My mom and I painted a slug face mural, and each kiddo participated in games to earn their three slugs.

Happy 6th Birthday, Rowan!
