Today is normally Rowan's preschool day, but it's spring break. And of course I forgot and packed everyone up to drop Rowan off at school only to realize my mistake once we pulled into the empty driveway. This nearly led to a meltdown, except for my lightning quick proposal "Let's get ice cream!"
You can't be sad when you're eating ice cream.
At the Dollar Tree, the boys found a cute little hummingbird feeder. I have fond memories of making "nectar" and filling feeders for the hummingbirds...I think I may have even done a science project on something like that. Ding ding! *Lightbulb* Who loves science right now? Oh yeah, Rowan does! Threw that one in the basket.
When we got home Rowan was eager to fill the feeder. We took a few minutes to talk about hummingbirds; how they eat nectar from flowers through their long beaks, how the nectar gives theme energy, and how even though we can't make real nectar like flowers do, we can make something close by mixing sugar with water.
Then we mixed up some sugar water. We used tap water and were very approximate with the sugar to water ratio. Hummingbird.net has this Hummingbird Feeder Recipe (1 part sugar to 4 parts water) and gives more info on creating and storing your hummingbird food.
Hope we get some hummingbirds!

Great thinking on your toes!! I remember your hummingbird science project!! Do you remember that we hardly had birds at all when we moved here? We researched how to attract birds. Turns out they like trees, bushes and flowers. No shortage of birds now. Happy Humming-birding!
ReplyDeleteSweet, you girls are so good with nature. Sarah's your little 'bird whisperer' Bev.
